Imagine the consciousness of an earthworm. It could never conceive of being an intelligent animal like a crow. And the crow could never imagine being an intelligent being like a baby. And a baby could never imagine being an intelligent being like a mature adult. And a mature adult could never imagine the next stage in our eternal lives after we mature away from Earthly conceptions of life. And on and on.
There are continuous stages of development far beyond what we can envision, just as there are stages of life beyond the earthworm’s sentience the earthworm could never envision. We never stop advancing.
These later stages are unimaginable to us, just as being a mature adult is unimaginable for an earthworm or even a baby. Some have suggested there are seven levels of advancement in our consciousness, but the word “levels” is misleading. It brings to mind levels of a house. You are either on the basement, the first floor, or the second floor, with no stages between the levels. That isn’t what we know about our consciousness’s advancement after leaving Earth. The levels are more like ages on Earth. We are a baby, then a child, then adolescent, then a young adult, then a mature adult. These are like levels. But a baby doesn’t suddenly become a child, and an adolescent doesn’t suddenly become a young adult. There are gradual growth advancements. But we still give the growth ages names as though they were discrete changes. In the same way, the levels in the next stages of our life have names and descriptions, but they are all gradual in development.
Level 1 is described as our Earth School lives. Level 2 is a lower level after we leave Earth that is reserved for people who are spiritually immature. They are angry, spiteful, and self-absorbed. They live with others who are at the same low level of spiritual maturity in a realm that is darker and unpleasant. They are creating the world by their lower spiritual state. They can rise above that level at any time by changing their heart and minds to be more loving and compassionate.
They they will be in the third level, called by the Theosophists Summerland. That is where nearly all people from Earth go. As people become even more loving, compassionate, and wise, they find they are gradually growing into the state of mind called Level 4. It is populated by kind, loving, compassionate, wise people whose state of mind creates a beautiful world with no negatives. People on that level have little or no need for body experiences.
Level 5, as described by the Theosophists, is sometimes called the plane of flame. People have dispensed with the need for a body. We are incapable of imagining this level. We are using bodies now and can’t imagine doing without them. But when we reach that level, it will seem natural and desirable. The next two levels often described are higher levels far beyond our ability to envision them. Throughout all these levels, even the last in which we are so close to the Source that we are like one mind, we remain the individuals we are. And we retain all the relationships with those we love. We never lose our individuality, even when we are so aligned with the love and compassion of the Source that it is as though we were one. We are still individuals.
But don’t be concerned about these later levels now. We can no more understand them than that worm could understand the personality and thoughts of a mature human. We will see the horizons of these later levels as we grow into them, like a child growing from age 3 to a mature adult aged 73 through many stages. Enjoy this life with all its pleasurable experiences and opportunities for advancement. And know that when you finish with this level of your eternal life, you will happily advance to the next level, we call Heaven or Level 3, where you will live with all the people and pets you love for the rest of eternity.
