Communication Experiences in Dreams Are Evidence You Will Never Die

Introduction to Lesson 9

People now living in the afterlife can communicate with us. They have that ability because it requires just thinking a message. They are often trying to get through to us mentally, especially in the days and weeks after they have left their bodies behind. We just aren’t able to slow down long enough to receive their messages. They do try to communicate.

One ordinary situation in which they can come through to our conscious mind is in dreams. When we dream, our bodies and minds are relaxed, so we have fantasy dreams we wouldn’t accept as real in our normal day-to-day lives. It is still difficult for them to get through to us. But they do try. And at times, they are successful in wonderful, uplifting communications with loved ones in dreams.

Dream Visitations When the Dreamer Learns Things He or She Could Not Have Known

Ordinary dreams about a deceased loved one are common and largely understood as the mind processing grief. But researchers who study this area distinguish those from a different category entirely: dream visitations, which people who experience them describe as qualitatively different — vivid beyond normal dreaming, emotionally direct, and often ending with information the dreamer had no way of knowing while awake. In case after documented case, dreamers have reported waking with specific facts — the location of a lost document, the cause of a death that had seemed unexplained, an unresolved family matter — that were later independently verified as accurate. It is this feature, information transfer rather than emotional content alone, that researchers point to as the strongest evidence that these experiences involve something beyond ordinary dreaming.

A Woman Has A Vivid Dream of Her Deceased Husband

Claudia Carlton Lambright

Claudia Carlton Lambright is the author of Just a Dream Away: After-Death Communication Through Dreams. She explains dream visitations:

Claudia’s Dream

I hope I’m adequately expressing how amazing this dream experience was. It was as if there were a play in progress and I stepped onto the stage and asked one of the actors to hug me in the middle of the play. My family was going about their day as if nothing was unusual, but it was a dream and I was the only one who knew it.

Exactly a year after Rusty’s death, he came to me in a very special dream. I dreamed I was at a business meeting. After getting checked in and moving into my hotel room, I went down to the lobby.

There were lots of people there, but they all seemed to be engaged in conversation, so I stayed in the fringes. Suddenly, I looked slightly to the right and there was Rusty, standing very close to me and smiling. I knew immediately that it was a visit.

Surprised and elated as usual, I cried, ‘Rusty, you’re here!’ ‘Yes,’ he said. ‘I felt you really needed me, so I came.’ I think he asked me what’s wrong, why was I pulling on him so hard? I told him I missed him and wanted to see him.

He said, ‘Do you need help with the questions? If they ask you what’s the most important thing, tell them kindness. Because it’s not at all forthcoming.’ I hoped I would be able to remember everything he was saying.

Then our son was there with us and the three of us were standing close together, holding hands. Then my consciousness faded and I opened my eyes back in bed.

A Man Has a Dream Visitation from His Ex-Wife

Dr. Allan Botkin

In a second dream visitation, a patient of Dr. Allan Botkin, originator of the Induced After-Death Communication psychotherapy procedure, told him about a dream he had of his ex-wife. It had all the hallmarks of a dream visitation: it was extremely vivid; the patient remembered the dream thoroughly; the dream had significance for the patient; and the dream contained details that show it was his ex-wife visiting him.

This is the account from our book, Induced After-Death Communication.
A Man’s Dream Visitation from His Ex-Wife

Jerry had come to see me for psychotherapy about an unrelated matter, but after developing some trust in me, felt he could tell me his spontaneous ADC story without being labeled a nutcase.

Jerry was living in the Midwest, and his ex-wife was living on the East Coast with their three children. One night, he experienced the clear image of his ex-wife while he was asleep. She looked beautiful, peaceful, and happy, he said, and she wanted to tell me about something of great concern to her.

Jerry said she told him that he needed to start playing a more important role in rearing their children, and even offered very specific suggestions about each child. Jerry said his experience was much clearer than a dream. Jerry awoke right after his experience, baffled by its remarkable clarity. He could remember the entire experience, and for him, it felt like a real conversation with his ex-wife.

After lying awake a while trying to make sense of his experience, he managed to get back to sleep. The next morning as he was making coffee, the phone rang. It was his ex-wife’s sister. Tearfully, she told Jerry his ex-wife had been killed in a car accident during the night. Suddenly, the meaning of his experience became clear.

Since then, Jerry’s ex-wife has appeared to him five times in spontaneous ADCs, each time offering further advice about their children. “Every time,” he said, “she did all the talking,” and after each experience, Jerry followed her advice closely. In all instances, the advice turned out to be very helpful.

As he told me the story, Jerry laughed at one point and said, “She hasn’t changed much. She was always hyperverbal and bossy.” When I asked him if he thought that his wife had really visited him after she died, he said defiantly, “I am sure of it. I am as sure of it as I am that I’m looking at you right now. Nobody can ever tell me that it wasn’t real, not you or anyone else.

I don’t care what other people think about this because they really don’t know. I didn’t believe in this stuff before it happened, but now I have no doubt whatsoever.”

An Author Has a Dream Visitation from Her Father

Rosemary Ellen Guiley

Rosemary Ellen Guiley was a leading expert in the paranormal, metaphysical, and spiritual fields, and is the author of more than 50 books, including the Pocket Dream Guide and Dictionary and five other books on dreams. She was a lay facilitator of dreamwork since the early 1990s, helping people explore their dreams in one-on-one and group settings. She also conducted workshops on developing intuitive and psychic ability. She was a former board member of the International Association for the Study of Dreams. Rosemary was a frequent guest on Coast to Coast AM, where she often discussed dreams.

This excerpt is from her book, Dream Messages from the Afterlife which she provided for the book Afterlife Communication: 16 Proven Methods, 85 True Accounts, reprinted here by the editor.

About two weeks after his death, I had this intense and realistic dream meeting with him. The air was charged with a heavy, electrical energy, and everything had sharp, intense colors and tangible forms that I could feel. I recorded this in my dream diary:

I am at my parents’ house, sitting in a chair in the living room. Mom is home, somewhere in the house, but I do not see her; I just know she is there. Across from me, sitting in his favorite easy chair, is Dad. I know he’s dead, and he knows he’s dead, and that I know it, too. I also know that I am the only one who can see him. The room is lit with a peculiar bright light, and there is strange electricity in the air. I feel rather strange.

I say, ‘Dad, what are you doing here? You’re dead! You can’t stay here. You’ve got to move on.’

Dad smiles and shakes his head. He explains to me that he has things he still has to do here. I argue with him: He’s dead and he must not stay.

The scene suddenly shifts. I am no longer in my parents’ house, but am watching Dad disappear into the distance. He is walking into a large building. Somehow I know it is a factory, or something like it—a place where work is done. Dad is going to work.

I had no doubt that I’d had a real encounter with my father, and that it concerned his need to fully leave the Earth plane. Upon awakening, I could not recall the exact content of our conversation, but it had seemed to be quite detailed, and our meeting had the feeling of lasting a long time. In life, Dad could be stubborn. I could well imagine his irritation that death inconveniently interrupted his upcoming plans and activities. The symbolism of being in the living room of the house was not lost on me.

A Woman Is Visited by Her Deceased Dad in a Dream

Dr. Jane Vair Bissler, Ph.D., LPCC, FT

Dr. Jane Vair Bissler was a state-licensed psychotherapist who developed the afterlife communication procedure called Loving Hearts Connections. Dr. Bissler co-authored the book Loving Connections: The Healing Power of After-Death Communications, with Lisa J. Heiser, M.A., LCPC, NCC. In the book, the authors present a number of uplifting afterlife communications people have had. Among them are connections people have experienced in dreams.

In one dream visitation account, the authors write, “Linda’s story about how difficult it is for many grievers to focus on the future. The encouragement she received from the connections with her deceased father allowed her to move forward.” This is their account of the experience.
Linda’s Story

Dad was right. The Arizona desert was beautiful. It was just the way he had described his paradise. My brother and I grew up with dad’s constant chatter about how the desert was where he wanted to spend his retirement years.

Gazing out of the hospital window, I knew dad would not have much more time in this place he called heaven on earth. He was on a ventilator, having suffered a massive cardiac arrest. When the day finally came, we gave the doctors permission to unplug the machines that were keeping his body artificially functioning. Dad died immediately, and I brought him home to Ohio.

As the months passed, I couldn’t accept the fact that he was gone. I constantly questioned our decisions regarding the medical issues that occurred during his illness and about turning off the life-supporting machines. I guess it was the guilt that was creating such misery.

Fourteen months after his death, I received a visit. Some would call it a dream, but it was more vivid, and the communication was between both of us. It was a beautiful Arizona morning, and Dad and I were sitting on a bench in a desert garden. The flowering cacti were fragrant, and the colors were gorgeous.

“Honey, are you sure you understand why I had to leave?” I was crying and didn’t hear myself answer. He repeated the question and then said, “I know how you are feeling because I didn’t want to say goodbye to my parents either. They were sick and in pain, and I had to let them go. Linda, I want you to know it’s even more beautiful here than in my home in Arizona.”

That really brought tears to my eyes because of the way he felt about his “piece of heaven” in Arizona. I told him I understood, but the guilt I felt for unplugging the life-giving machines was causing me anguish. He assured me it was his decision not to stay on earth, and his words soothed the pain I felt. I awoke and felt drained. As the day progressed, however, I began to feel lighter in my heart than I had for weeks.

After this experience of connection, I slowly began to reconcile with his death. I was able to talk about him without the usual flood of tears and felt encouraged to go on with my life.

Anyone might have a dream visitation. They are not in our control, however. If you haven’t had a dream visitation, but want one, it doesn’t mean your loved one is ignoring you. Those in the next life can’t make the dream visitations happen easily, just as they can’t materialize in full body and speak to you. They do want to communicate, and may be able to communicate in dreams. They are not ignoring you and have not left you. They are only a thought away. Ask for a dream visitation. If they are able to help you have one, they will come to you. It is just one of the many ways you can communicate with your loved one in the afterlife. It is further proof, you and your loved ones will never die.

Why Is This Evidence Beyond a Reasonable Doubt of the Afterlife?

What distinguishes a dream visitation from an ordinary dream about someone we miss is not the emotion it carries but the information it delivers — details the dreamer had no way of knowing while awake, arriving with a clarity and intensity every account in this lesson describes as categorically different from normal dreaming. Rusty’s widow did not simply dream of comfort; she received a specific instruction — the word ‘kindness,’ offered as an answer to a question she did not yet know she would be asked — words she could not have manufactured from her own expectations because she had no expectations to manufacture them from.

Jerry’s case removes any possibility of ordinary explanation altogether. He experienced an unusually vivid encounter with his ex-wife, who told him she needed to speak with him about their children — and only the next morning, before he had any way of knowing what had happened three time zones away, did he learn she had died in a car accident that same night. No grief process, however vivid, produces information about an event the dreamer could not yet know had occurred. And Rosemary Ellen Guiley, a professional researcher of dreams for over three decades who had catalogued thousands of other people’s dream experiences, treated her own encounter with her father with the same evidentiary seriousness she brought to her research — precisely because its content exceeded what she recognized as the boundaries of an ordinary dream.

When people with no prior belief in an afterlife, no expectation of contact, and in Jerry’s case, no way of knowing an event had even occurred, report visitations carrying information later confirmed as accurate, the simplest explanation is not coincidence repeated across unrelated cases. It is that the connection people feel with those they have lost does not end with death, and that under the right conditions — sleep, and a mind quiet enough to receive it — that connection can still deliver a message.

Reflection: Have you had a dream about your loved one that felt different from an ordinary dream — more vivid, more real, or carrying information you didn’t already have? Consider writing it down, in detail, while it is still fresh in memory.

Every case so far has involved communication after death. Our final lesson in this area turns to the moment of death itself — and to the mounting evidence that consciousness continues functioning, clearly and acutely, even after the brain has stopped.

Questions and Topics for Group Discussion

  • Claudia’s dream and the account from Dr. Botkin’s patient both involved specific, vivid details rather than vague comfort. What details from either account stood out most to you?
  • This lesson makes clear that dream visitations can’t be forced or guaranteed. How does that idea sit with you — does it feel frustrating, freeing, or something else?
  • The lesson says a loved one who hasn’t visited in a dream isn’t ignoring you. Have you ever worried, after a loss, that a lack of contact meant something it didn’t?
  • Ordinary dreams about a loved one are common; dream visitations are described as qualitatively different. Do you think you’d be able to tell the difference if it happened to you?
  • If you wanted to invite a dream visitation from someone you’ve lost, what would you want to ask them, or say to them, before you fell asleep?
